“Elijah went into the wilderness where, physically exhausted and emotionally drained from the events in his life, he collapsed under a juniper tree. There he prayed, “It is enough now, O Lord, take away my life. Not “it is finished”, but “It is enough.” I am not Elijah, nor have I gone through what he did. But I have prayed, “Lord, it is enough!”
During His ministry on earth, Jesus faced the forces of hell and fought them to a standstill, but He did not feed all the hungry, heal all the sick or raise all the dead. Yet when Jesus came to the end of His life’s work prior to His crucifixion, He said, “I have finished the work that you gave me to do.” (John 17:4)
When the end of my life comes, I, too, want to be able to say, “I have finished the work that you have given me to do. I do not want to say, “It is enough,” before I can say, with His help, “It is finished” (Ruth Bell Graham)
