“And when I brought you into a fruitful land to enjoy its bounty and goodness, you defiled my land and corrupted the possession I had promised you.” Jeremiah 2:7
Today we hear a great deal about ecology and the fact that we need to clean up the land. That is good—it needs cleaning up. But let’s recognize that there is a lot of moral filth around and a lot of degradation and deterioration in character. This is the thing that the Lord God is talking about here. They had polluted God’s land. God intended that they be a witness to Him; instead, they are as bad as the people before them. God clearly called the land of Israel His land and His heritage. Israel both defiled the land and made it an abomination through their idolatry. The land of Israel is about the size of the state of New Jersey, it is the most contested land on the face of the earth. God gave this land to Israel some 4000 years ago. Because of idol worship and a failure to heed the prophesying of Jeremiah in Jerusalem and Ezekiel in Babylonia, the Lord allowed them to be taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar. In 1948 Israel became a nation. Never before in the history of the human race have a people been able to come back as a nation after being scattered all over the world. The Jews are God’s chosen people. Satan has tried to destroy the Jewish people but God will not allow this to happen. Satan one last time will try to destroy the Jewish people at the conclusion of the Great Tribulation, but Jesus will return and defeat Satan.
