“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: “Cut down the trees for battering rams. Build siege ramps against the walls of Jerusalem. This is the city to be punished, for she is wicked through and through. She spouts evil like a fountain. Her streets echo with the sounds of violence and destruction. I always see her sickness and sores. Listen to this warning, Jerusalem, or I will turn from you in disgust. Listen, or I will turn you into a heap of ruins, a land where no one lives.” Jeremiah 6:6-8
The Lord told the Babylonian army what to do: Chop down trees and build ramps against the walls of the city. Then He told them why they were doing it. Jerusalem was like a well that pours out filthy water, and the city must be punished. It was like a dying person with infected wounds that couldn’t be healed, and these things must be purged away. Finally, God told them how to do it: with precision and thoroughness, the way gleaners go over a vineyard so as not to miss any fruit (Jer. 6:5, 9). As the enemy massed against Jerusalem, they were eager to attack. They hoped to attack at noon; but before the preparations were completed the shadows of evening had begun to stretch through the valleys around the city. Most armies would wait till the next day to begin, but the Babylonians decided to begin their attack that night. God directed the soldiers of Babylon as they built siege ramps to breach the city’s defenses. (Ezekiel 4:1-6)
The false prophets of today are telling the people that God would not do this anymore, because He is a loving God. Yes God is a loving God, but He is also a holy God and He cannot stand sin. If our nation does not repent and turn back to Him, we will see God’s anger as Israel did in Jeremiah’s day.
